Richard Ira Bong (September 24, 1920 – August 6, 1945) was a United States Army Air Forces major and Medal of Honor recipient in World War II. He was one of the most decorated American fighter pilots and the country's top flying ace in the war, credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft, all with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter. Frederick Carl Bock (January 18, 1918 – August 25, 2000) was a World War II pilot who took part in the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. Bock attended the University of Chicago and went on to enroll in a graduate course in philosophy. Upon the entry of the United States into the Second World War, Bock enlisted in the Army Air Force, becoming a pilot.
